Working From Home (WFH) in Mauritius – The New Normal!

WFH seems to be creating a buzz — ever since Covid-19 has given Mauritius little option but to experiment with remote working. And following the imposition of lockdown by our government and with the recent introduction of the Employment Rights (Working from Home) Regulations 2019, many organisations have been compelled to rethink about their cost structures, business strategies and work procedures so that business can carry on as usual to some extent!

However, one of my ex-colleague recently reached out to me telling me that one of his best employees/an "asset" was going to be fired because he's been "unproductive" during lockdown/Covid19/working from home.

And this question inevitably came into my mind – How can an "asset" become unproductive overnight?!

At the forefront, we know that this pandemic has been a challenge for all of us irrespective! One that couldn’t be foreseen! And whilst being ‘confined’ at home, many suddenly noticed themselves having to face the dreadful thoughts of what we call UNCERTAINTY & LACK OF CLARITY with the many unanswered questions that linger in our minds daily.

Questions and so many of them! When is it going to end? Is my family safe? What will life look like when this is over? Am I still valued at work? Is my job protected? Many who are also used to traveling and meeting people as part of their jobs have somehow noticed their emotions getting all over the place. And it’s even more difficult for those who have a team to manage remotely as they have to ensure their own wellbeing first before they can even tackle that of their team! And right now many of us feel it can be hard to step away from the keyboard when we’re working from home.

There's so much going on — new business strategies/practices being implemented, zoom discussions happening, decisions being made quickly — all this can be made to feel stressful to disconnect and miss something. There is also the added stress of managing 100’s of email threads that showed up if you happen to be offline which undermine the ones you were tackling in the first place. So, being able to leverage technology to work from home does necessitate (inevitably so!) a good work/life balance with much objectivity – do you agree with me?

And contemplating on the above, this has left me with yet another question – If the Government has approved a legal right for people to work from home, is it not deemed important to create a new ‘Right to Disconnect’ law as well?

A law that would protect the mental health of the new generation of home workers whilst also enabling companies to fulfil their duty of care to protect the health & wellbeing of staff. We all need to take a moment, step back, and recharge! And by having a lower burnout because of said work/life balance , one could, undoubtedly, function better for everyone!

Do you concur?
