Today we commemorate the 184th anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the island

Let’s go back to history;
In August 1833 the law of abolishing slavery was passed by the British parliament
Mauritius being a British colony during that period, the law came into force in Mauritius in 1835
Today we want to pay tribute to a site which holds a great importance in the history of the slaves; Le Morne Brabant
Nowadays Le Morne is surely one of the most popular and beautiful spots on the island for both tourists and locals
But this mountain is so much more than just a beautiful spot. It has been the witness of the tragedy of slaves
In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Le Morne was used as a hideaway for runaway slaves who founded small settlements in the caves and on the summit
After slavery was abolished in 1835, lookouts on the mountain saw the British approaching and mistakenly thought they were going to be recaptured
Some of the slaves threw themselves off the mountain, choosing death over slavery
As you can see this place holds a great importance in the history of slavery and their fight for freedom on the island
Thus, Le Morne has been declared a world heritage site since 2008.
It has monuments dedicated to the slaves at the bottom of the mountain
Thank you to all the slaves without whom and their hard work 🇲🇺 would not be what it is today
