I started a new weekly livestream Q&A series last week that we’re calling “The Long View With Rafat.” The livestreams, hosted every Friday at 3 p.m. ET, are informal, insightful conversations with travel industry insiders — and outsiders — on larger perspectives on the crisis in the global travel industry, and different ways of looking at opportunities in these times. Listen to the first episode here with Jordan Klein, the managing director at Baird on opportunities ahead in B2C, B2B, and corporate travel companies and travel suppliers.

This week, I am interviewing Alan Woinski, the editor and founder of the 25-year old daily hotel owners and investors-focused industry newsletter The Daily Lodging Report. Alan has been pioneer — and a trenchant voice — in the lodging and gaming industry media and information sector. He was very prescient in calling early how coronavirus would upend the hotel and travel industry, since early January in his newsletter and in sister publications, the Gaming Industry Daily and Weekly Reports.

Alan wrote a column for us on the end of this hotel upcyle in early March, titled “Myopia, Spin and the End of the Hotel Industry’s Winning Streak.” He finished the column with this line: “It only matters that when this upcycle is finally declared to have met its demise, we start looking for a new one to start soon.” So we will focus on that cycle ahead, how various hotel tiers will fare going ahead, and what could hotel owners and investors look forward to in the recovery phase.

We are doing these online events on a pay-what-you-want basis. Your support means Skift journalists and analysts can continue to do expansive and up-to-date coverage of coronavirus and its impact on the global travel industry.
