Bilateral meetings of Prime Minister Jugnauth

The Summit was held from the 09 to 10 February at the Headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The key theme was Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development, with focus on conflicts, peace and security.

Prime Minister Jugnauth also met the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, in presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha.

During these meetings, possibilities of further cooperation in various sectors between Mauritius and the other mentioned African countries were evoked. Discussions also focused on projects and agreements which are in the pipeline.

The actions that Mauritius intends to take following the refusal of the United Kingdom to comply with the decision of the International Court of Justice and the resolution of the United Nations, were also at the fore of discussions. The British government had, as a reminder until November 22, to return the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius.

To this end, Prime Minister Jugnauth, dwelt on the importance of the decolonisation of Africa, which he said, is a fundamental issue for the African Continent. “It gives me immense pleasure to see the support of the African Union on the Chagos issue“, he added.

With regard to the Intercontinental Slavery Museum being constructed at ex-Labourdonnais Military Hospital in Port-Louis, he requested Senegal and Tanzania to extend their expertise to Mauritius.

It is to be noted that the Prime Minister also signed the Book of Condolences in memory of the former President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi, who passed away on 04 February 2020.
