Republic of Mauritius- Some 1,6 kg of cannabis worth Rs 1 million seized at the airport

GIS – 10 February, 2020: Some 1,6 kg of cannabis of a market value of Rs 1 million concealed in three chocolate boxes of Ferrero Rocher were intercepted, on 8 February 2020, by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

The passenger, an inhabitant of Phoenix, arrived on board the Air Austral flight from Reunion Island and he was intercepted by CANS while he was leaving thru the green channel. His luggage was scanned and the images appeared normal. 

Further investigation revealed that cannabis leaves were found inside the chocolate boxes. The male passenger, aged 40 and painter by profession, confessed that all chocolates contained cannabis.

 

The passenger and drugs were handed over to the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit for further investigation.
