The red sign on my forehead is a “tilak” used in ceremonies or special religious occasions for hindus. The hindu temple I visited in Mauritius was having a cerimony and a Pandit ( I am not sure if it is the same but it is kind of a priest) asked if I would like to be blessed like the others . I am always interested in the way different people practice their religion and I took the blessing as a positive sign for my upcoming passage.
Indians have been in Mauritius for generations, most descendants of the the immigration there in the mid-19th century to work in farms, most sugar cane plantations. There are many Hindu temples in the island. I went to Gran Bassin, the biggest one that is located in the south area.

Mauritius is much more than a tropical island. It is a island well-know for the stability and racial harmony among its mixed population. Mauritius has a plural society where all the ethnic groups are present. Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans . People in Mauritius seem to respect each other’s culture and live in relative peace.
