Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius Police Force renews pledge to advocate for gender equality

A parade, a demonstration as well as a display and musical show comprising of only Women Police Officers were held on that occasion.

In his address, the Commissioner of Police emphasised that the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) will continue to uphold the dignity and respect of all women serving in the Police Force and will not tolerate any form of discriminatory practice.

In addition, Mr Nobin recalled that the induction of women in the MPF can be traced back as far as the 1940s, and underpinned the changing role and contribution of Women Police Officers throughout the years.  Women Police Officers are now called upon to serve in various capacities in almost all sections of the Police Force as well as take up commanding roles at par with their male colleagues, he highlighted.

According to the Commissioner of Police, a change in mindset is required with regards to women empowerment as there still are certain challenges hindering the process.  Thus, it is necessary to ’Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change’ as is highlighted by the UN campaign for IWD 2019, he indicated.

For him, it is essential to uphold the values and principles of gender equality, in particular in male-dominated organisations such as the MPF, where women are numerically inferior.  Despite the challenging environment, Women Police Officers still contribute to the efficiency of the Police Force by performing their job with honour and in a praiseworthy manner, he pointed out.

Moreover, Mr Nobin recalled that innovation for change has become the hallmark of the MPF and working in a smart way and using technology are crucial for better efficiency and for an institution to operate in an economically viable manner.
