The number of candidature represents a record since the holding of the first general elections in Mauritius which dates back to 1967.
The three main political parties namely L’Alliance Morisien (MSM-ML); L’Alliance Nationale;( Ptr-PMSD); and the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) have each presented a list of 60 candidates in the 21 constituencies which also include Rodrigues and Agalega and the rest are from the other political groups as well as independent candidates.
It will be recalled that some 941 719 electors are registered under the electoral register to cast their vote for the 2019 general elections.
The government is formed by the largest party/group alliance in the National Assembly. The leader of the single party winning the highest number of seats becomes the Prime Minister and leads the government. The Leader of the second largest party in the house (unless it is in alliance with the majority party) becomes the Leader of the Opposition.
