Republic of Mauritius- Prime Minister Jugnauth reiterates determination to enhance the quality of life of Mauritians

GIS – 16 September, 2019:Government’s vision is to spearhead development for all segments of the population, who will be bestowed with due respect and recognition, and also to ensure their well-being through the long-term progress of the country. Our aim is to modernise and transform the landscape of Mauritius through major developmental projects, all poised to make the country a better place to live in and to enhance the quality of life of the population’.

The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, was speaking, on Friday 13 September 2019, at the inauguration ceremony of the Britannia Village Hall.  The Village Hall essentially aims at making accessible social spaces and facilities wherein youths and other members of the society can thrive socially and develop their potentials and talents.

Some Rs 11 million was disbursed for the Village Hall built on an area of 50m2 hectares. It includes a cultural space, a recreational space as well as a new village Council Room with a leisure area, and other amenities.

In his address, Prime Minister Jugnauth reiterated his support to sugarcane farmers and announced that in line with the 2019-2020 Budgetary measure to pay a special price of Rs 25,000 per ton of sugar to planters for the first 60 tons of sugar accrued to them, an advance of 80% on the special price will now be paid to them.

Speaking about Government’s ongoing battle against the UK to exercise full sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, the Prime minister expressed confidence that Mauritius will regain its legitimate rights. He expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for his stand and support with regards to the decision taken by international bodies in favour of Mauritius. 

Moreover, the Prime Minister recalled that Pope Francis’ visit to Mauritius was indeed a landmark event for the country that was blessed with his Holy presence. My aim for Mauritius, he stated, is to make the citizens proud of their country and to leave the next generations with a prosperous future and vibrant heritage. 

The Prime Minister spoke about his determination to concretise projects geared towards modernising the whole Republic of Mauritius, by ensuring that major infrastructural development projects are carried out indistinctly in all regions. Government’s core objective, he said, is to provide the whole population, in both towns and villages, with the necessary infrastructure and facilities to live in the best conditions possible.

In addition, Prime Minister dwelt on key initiatives taken to considerably enhance the living conditions and quality of life of the population, in particular the vulnerable members of the society, namely: the Negative Income Tax and the Minimum Salary, free tertiary education, and increase in old age pension. Moreover, Mr Jugnauth reiterated Government’s determination to combat the drug scourge and criminality in the country to protect the population and in particular the youth. The Safe City project, he added, aims at tackling illegal activities and protecting the population.
