Republic of Mauritius- New Traffic Centre at Pointe aux Sables inaugurated

The Traffic Centre with a surface area of 14 500m² is the latest addition in Government’s contribution to modernise the public transport system and provide proper and safer environment for bus operators and users.

In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the setting up of new traffic centres across the island is in line with the vision of the Government to enhance the quality of life of the population and improve mass transportation. It is one of several major infrastructural projects that Government has undertaken with the objective to provide improved services to the citizens and ensure road safety.

The new Traffic Centre, he said, will allow additional bus routes to serve the locality and solve the problem of buses parking along the  existing road due to lack of proper holding area and bus stands. With regard to road accidents, the Deputy Prime Minister Collendavelloo urged for more discipline and appealed the public to inculcate a culture of defensive driving.

For his part, Minister Bodha reiterated that the Metro Express is right on time and on track and that a soft launching will be done towards the end of September. He pointed out that the integration of buses and the Metro Express will be done in a smooth manner and all aspects will be duly considered.

On this score, he reassured that the Metro Express Project will not have a huge impact on bus operators adding that additional routes will be created for their operations. A sum of Rs 800 million, he said, will be disbursed under the Bus Recovery Fund to support bus companies who find themselves in difficulty.

He recalled that a new road of 3 km is being constructed near to the Traffic Centre to link Pointe aux Sables to Petite-Riviere with the aim to facilitate the commuting of the inhabitants of the region. He enumerated several other infrastructural projects that are in the pipeline while highlighting that the transformation of existing transport network into a modern and effective one is integral to the country’s development.
