GIS – 01 March, 2019: A Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CaDRi) Team, represented by the United Nations Development Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Organisation for Migration, undertook a scoping mission in Mauritius from 26 to 28 February 2019. The Team was in Mauritius following a request submitted from the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity, and Environment and Sustainable Development through the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator’s Office to benefit from the CaDRi Partnership services.

The CaDRi Team had several working sessions with the various stakeholders, both from public and private sectors, involved in disaster risk reduction (DRR). The aim was to understand what type of tailored CaDRi support is required, to define services, products and expertise required, and to define the nature of capacity assessment.

CaDRi brings together six UN organisations as executive partners, seven as technical partners and six as advisory partners. The executive partners are the Food and Agriculture Organization; the United Nations Development Programme; the United Nations Population Fund; the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund; the World Food Programme; and the World Health Organisation. The CaDRi Partnership is an UN-led interagency initiative that delivers customised capacity development support in DRR, including preparedness for emergency response, to countries at risk.

The range of capacity development services include the facilitation of an assessment of national capacities in DRR using a multi-sectoral methodology; and a decision aid tool for prioritisation of DRR capacity development actions so as to develop national DRR plans and strategies. They also comprise the facilitation of access by countries to expertise, knowledge and resources within and outside the UN system to implement their national priorities; knowledge management and dissemination of good practices in DRR in support of the roll out of the Words into Action guides; and a combined offer of training modules on DRR.
