GIS – 19 August, 2019: A cash prize ceremony to reward athletes of the Mauritian team for their outstanding performance during the Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) 2019, was held on, Friday 16 August 2019, at the Ravenala Attitude Hotel in Balaclava. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, was present on the occasion.

Gold medalists received Rs 100, 000, while silver medalists were awarded Rs 70, 000 and bronze medalists Rs 50, 000.  As for athletes who did not win any medals, they received a reward of Rs 20, 000.

In his address, Minister Toussaint underlined that the excellent performance of Mauritian athletes during the IOIG 2019 was the outcome of years of practice and training. He underlined Government’s relentless support and massive investment to make provision for the best conditions for both the organisation of the Games and also to ensure the optimum performance of the Mauritius team. Some Rs 67 million has been earmarked for the preparation of athletes while some Rs 13 million has been disbursed for cash prizes, Mr Toussaint indicated.

The Minister dwelt on Government’s vision to promote a sports culture in Mauritius and provide the necessary facilities to all citizens to engage in sporting activities as well as support athletes to attain excellence. IOIG 2019, he emphasised, was only a starting point for local athletes, and they will be offered  opportunities to showcase their competencies during other key sporting events.

Local athletes, Mr Toussaint pointed out, are currently participating in the 2019 African Games in Morocco, for which Government has disbursed some Rs 15 million.  He further urged local athletes to keep up with their extensive training and step up efforts to come out as winners during the 11th edition of the IOIG to be held in 2023 in Maldives as well as during the Olympics Games in Tokyo in 2020 and Paris in 2024.
