Mauricio Pochettino has been charged with improper conduct by the FA following his outburst at referee Mike Dean after Tottenham’s defeat at Burnley.

The Spurs boss had to be held back from Dean after the full-time whistle at Turf Moor after confronting him twice and shouting in his face.

Pochettino played down the incident after his side’s 2-1 loss, but now faces a touchline ban after the FA chose to act.

The FA statement said: ‘Mauricio Pochettino has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E3 following the game against Burnley on Saturday [23 February 2019].

‘It is alleged the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s language and/or behaviour at the end of the fixture – both on the pitch and in or around the tunnel area – amounted to improper conduct.

‘He has until 18:00 on 28 February 2019 to respond to the charge.’

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: ‘What happened on the pitch, happened on the pitch. We keep going. We made a few mistakes, we concede the two goals.

‘Congratulate Burnley, they fight a lot. We don’t deserve the defeat but that is football and I cannot say nothing. I can only keep going and be ready for next Wednesday.

‘It was an important game, I believe before the game we knew it would be decisive if we want to be a contender at the end of the season. At the end the emotions, everyone was nervous, sometimes you find answers and excuses and try to justify the defeat. It’s not normal how I behave.

‘I knew before the game and after the game that if we were to lose it was going to be difficult to be a real contender.

‘I think I am going to accept everything that can happen from FA. The thing happened on the pitch and I hope that it’s not going further.’
