The delegation, led by the Commissioner of the ACHPR, Mrs Soyata Maiga, is on a mission to Mauritius, from 13 to 17 August 2019, for the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights on the continent in line with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter).
In his address, Minister Gobin underlined the importance of NMRF recalling that its main objective is to ensure timely reporting and reviews to international bodies. The meeting, he pointed out, will help create better coordination between different stakeholders and the ACHPR.
The topic of human rights, the Minister underscored, concerns each and every one regardless of their Ministries, departments or institutions, and, all should work towards preserving equality and eliminating discrimination. The NMRF meeting has been fruitful in determining the position of various organisations as regards Human Rights, he recalled.
During the visit, the Commission will gather information regarding the implementation of the provisions of the African Charter with a view to encourage and assist State Parties in their efforts to comply with the African Charter and other regional and international human rights standards. The main objective is to strengthen relations between the Commission and stakeholders in Mauritius in the area of promoting and protecting the rights listed in the African Charter and other relevant national, regional and international human rights instruments.
