Republic of Mauritius- Inauguration of Roland Moothoo Municipal Hall to the tune of Rs 1.6 million

GIS – 25 February, 2019: A new Municipal Hall – the Roland Moothoo Municipal Hall – funded to the tune of Rs 1.6 million was inaugurated on Friday 22 February 2019 at Trèfles, in Rose Hill, by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Ivan Collendavelloo.


The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands, Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo and several other personalities were present.

 

In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister lauded the initiative of the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill for naming the new Municipal Hall after the late political activist Roland Moothoo as a tribute.  He moreover announced that several other governmental projects for the region of Rose Hill are in the pipeline, namely the construction of a Mediclinic in Stanley and the renovation of Berthaud Street.

 

Speaking about safeguarding the rights of workers, Mr Collendavelloo highlighted that Government is working on several amendments to be brought to labour-related laws.  Such amendments will better protect workers in cases of sudden closure of textile factories, he added.

 

For her part, Vice-Prime Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo pointed out that various projects initiated by her Ministry and other Ministries throughout the region of Rose Hill have either been completed or are in the pipeline.  Some of these projects are: a housing project by the National Housing Development Co Ltd; a community centre at Trèfles; a community centre to be constructed at Plaisance; renovation of drainage systems; improving infrastructures; and, the upcoming inauguration of a women’s centre for the region.

 

About the Roland Moothoo Municipal Hall

 

The Roland Moothoo Municipal Hall has been constructed with the objective to be used as a multipurpose hall.  The project consisted of the extension of the existing ground floor and addition of a first floor at Roland Moothoo Mini Library, and the construction of a social hall.
