Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius Research Council launches the Mauritius Research Repository

GIS – 25 February, 2019: The Mauritius Research Repository (MRR), an online open access collection of research projects, reports, presentations, publications, scholarly contents, media and other research works related to the Republic of Mauritius or produced by an author of Mauritian origin, was launched by Mauritius Research Council (MRC) in collaboration with Business Mauritius on 22nd February 2019 at the Hennesy Park Hotel, during a panel discussion and networking event on “Supporting Research and Innovation through the Collaborative Research and Innovation Schemes.

The MRR, an initiative of the MRC which falls under the aegis of the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation, is in line with Government’s vision to provide increased visibility and a knowledge-sharing platform to researchers, innovators and experts from both the public and private sector.

Speaking at the opening of the event, the Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, emphasised the importance of research and innovation and the holding of the networking event, which he said is the beginning of successful industry-academia collaboration. The event aimed at disseminating the collaborative research and innovation schemes and its achievement, showcase some of the projects funded, as well as allow networking between stakeholders from the private sector and academia/research institutions.

He further underlined that this initiative endeavours to pave the way for the country to be driven by innovation, by creating new opportunities for private investment and job creation. To this effect, the Minister added the MRC has been called upon to implement a number of Research and Innovation schemes including the Pole of Innovation, National SME Incubator and the Collaborative Research and Innovation Grant Scheme to usher the country on a higher growth trajectory.

Moreover, he recalled that his Ministry, which has the mandate of promoting innovation, is also geared towards accelerating the country’s move to an age of digitisation through Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain technologies and Fintech. Research, he underlined, has shown that multi-cultural teams are better at innovating and our country, through its rainbow nation is indeed a fertile ground for innovation, he stated. That is why, he added, his Ministry and the Government are laying much emphasis on innovation, fully acknowledging that investing in innovation is indeed an investment for the future.

Minister Sawmynaden, also dwelt on the importance of the MRR which according to him will become a gateway to all research conducted on Mauritius by Mauritian author and will allow individual researchers, innovators, local companies and overseas companies to search for a researcher or institution/company based on their expertise and previous research works.
