Ashley Barnes was the subject of a surprise scouting mission on Saturday — and the Burnley striker is now open to representing Austria.
Franco Foda, Austria’s head coach, sat next to England boss Gareth Southgate at Turf Moor and saw Bath-born Barnes, 29, maintain his outstanding form with the winner against Tottenham.
Barnes, who is eligible to represent Austria through his grandmother, said: ‘It’s something I’d like to do. It may be a bit strange playing for Austria because I was born here, but what will be, will be.’

Barnes has scored 33 goals in 168 appearances for Burnley since signing for the Lancashire club on an undisclosed three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2014.
The forward was first spotted by the Austrian Football Association while on a pre-season tour with former club Plymouth Argyle in 2008.
He even represented the country in a four-nation friendly tournament in August of that year.
