GIS – 09 August, 2019: The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, effected site visits, yesterday, at Cottage and Fond-Du-Sac.  The aim of the site visits was to take stock of the work progress achieved regarding the construction of drains to minimise flooding risks in these two villages during heavy rainfall.  The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Ashit Kumar Gungah, and other personalities were also present.

In a statement to the press following the site visits, Prime Minister Jugnauth expressed his satisfaction concerning the progression of works in the two villages.  An emergency procurement exercise, he pointed out, was carried out following which contractors were appointed to carry out the works at Cottage and Fond-Du-Sac.  The two projects, he added, will help alleviate the inhabitants of these regions in case of torrential rainfall.

Works at Fond-Du-Sac, to the tune of some Rs 104 million, span over 1,3 km and comprise the construction of a retention wall, drains, and a flood retardation basin of capacity of some 83 000 m3.  Completion of works is expected in November 2020.

As for works at Cottage, to the tune of some Rs 140 million, they comprise the construction of approximately 3 km of drains that cut across sugarcane fields.  They are expected to be completed in about two months.
