GIS – 02 August, 2019: The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, who is the President of the task force for the Père Laval pilgrimage, effected, yesterday, a site visit.  The aim of the visit was to take stock of the progress made in relation to the repair and embellishment works being undertaken in the church and the shrine. Other personalities, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Ivan Leslie Collendavelloo, were present.

In a statement after the site visit, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction as regards the works being carried out and which are expected to be completed within the set time-frame. The Ministerial Task Force, he highlighted, aims at ensuring that the two key forthcoming events, that is, the pilgrimage to be carried out on 7 and 8 September 2019, and, the visit to Mauritius of the Pope Francis scheduled for 9 September 2019, take place in the best conditions possible.

According to the Prime Minister, the visit of Pope Francis on this holy occasion is indeed a landmark event for the country. He also stressed on the need to make special arrangements for the smooth unfolding of the two events considering the huge number of pilgrims and foreigners who will come to Mauritius.

Mr Jugnauth urged the population to rally and take part in these two key events with the same spirit of brotherhood and unity that they showcased during the recent hosting of the Indian Ocean Islands Games 2019.  Government, he added, is keen on upholding and consolidating the strong sense of patriotism that prevails in the social fabric of the Island.  The Papal visit, he stressed, is yet another key national event that will further bond the population.

Site visit at Cité La Cure

The Prime Minister also carried out a site visit at Cité La Cure to take stock of progress made as regards the numerous infrastructural projects that were undertaken following the heavy rainfalls and the passage of cyclones earlier this year.  Much progress, he pointed out, has been made pertaining to the construction of drains as well as repair works of Pont Marjolin, which will be completed shortly.  The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction for the arrangements made at Robert Scott street for an easy access to the area.

In addition, Mr Jugnauth emphasised that the numerous infrastructural works carried out are geared towards offering more facilities and amenities for the residents of the area, and to considerably improve their living conditions.

At the core of Government’s agenda, said the Prime Minister, is the progress of the country as well as the constant upgrading of the quality of life of the population.  On that score, he reiterated Government’s determination to bring forth progress across the whole of the Republic of Mauritius and recalled that major infrastructural projects are underway.
