Outstanding performances of Mauritian athletes lauded by Minister Toussaint

GIS – 02 August, 2019: The outstanding performances of Mauritian athletes at the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), held from 19 to 28 July 2019, were highlighted by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, yesterday, during a press conference held in Port Louis.  The Minster also elaborated on forthcoming events and projects in the sports sector.


Minister Toussaint highlighted that Mauritius has excelled in the IOIG by receiving 41.2 % of gold medals and ranking first since the creation of the games in 1979. He seized the opportunity to express his utmost satisfaction with regard to the organisation and preparation of the IOIG multi-sports event.  

 

Mauritius has won a total number of 224 medals comprising 92 gold, 79 silver and 53 bronze medals, which he said is the results of the hardwork of athletes and the strenuous preparation that they have undergone to be able to give their best performances.

 

Speaking of Government’s commitment to assist athletes in their preparation, he stated that some Rs 67 million have been disbursed to ensure that they benefit from quality coaching and training.

 

Several facilities, Mr Toussaint pointed out, were put at the disposal of athletes comprising medical and paramedical support including counselling for proper dieting and provision of appropriate equipment and adequate transport. Athletes have also participated in training camps and competitions locally and abroad, he said.

 

The preparation for athletes is ongoing with forthcoming sports events such as the Jeux D’Afrique which will be held as from 19 August 2019 in Morocco, the Minister added. The preparation for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 was also highlighted. As regards the setting up of the Liverpool Football Academy in Mauritius, he stated that it will be launched as from this month at the Multi-Sports Complex of Côte d’Or.
