Sergio Ramos gave away a penalty and was sent off as Real Madrid were beaten by Girona at the Bernabeu for the first time ever.
Santiago Solari’s side came into the game after huge results against Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Ajax but were undone by relegation-threatened visitors. They led after Casemiro headed in Toni Kroos’ cross but self-destructed with Ramos at the heart of the collapse.
First he handled to gift Cristhian Stuani the chance to level from the spot. Then after Portu got the winner Ramos was shown a second yellow for a high kick in the Girona area.

The second booking might have been harsh, but the defeat will hurt more because it does serious harm to Real Madrid’s chances of getting back into the title race. It all caps a miserable week for the Real Madrid captain.
Girona appeared to have the first real chance of the game with Stuani going close from Pedro Porro’s pass. He was clearly offside but linesmen have been told not to raise their flags until moves are finished except when it’s definitely offside.
Madrid were left upset that the flag was not raised because when the move played out Courtois had to save the shot with his face and needed treatment for a bleeding nose afterwards.
Lucas Vazquez had Madrid’s first chance but Girona keeper Bono made the save. With their next attack Madrid forced a corner and Casemiro was left claiming a penalty. Alex Granell had clearly dragged him to the ground but the referee did not give a foul because the ball was still not in play – Kroos still hadn’t taken corner. It didn’t matter because Kroos and Casemiro combined to score with the next attack.
Bono punched instead of catching and that gifted Real Madrid another chance to put the ball into the area. Kroos’ delivery was topped only by Casemiro’s header, brilliantly angled past Bono to put Real Madrid ahead.

Madrid’s tails were up now and a great cross from converted winger Alvaro Odriozola was almost turned in by Karim Benzema. He came off injured in Amsterdam in the week and it seemed he did not want to stretch to connect with it.
Marcelo then shot right footed with an effort that went just over. He then beat Bono but was correctly flagged for offside.
Despite their dominance Madrid could not find the second and Girona should have equalised on the hour. It all started with a strange Casemiro tackle which ended up a pass to a Girona player.
A cross to the far post found Anthony Lozano who towered over Odriozola to win the header. Courtois saved well but the ball dropped perfectly to Manchester City loanee Alex Garcia who blazed over.
Gareth Bale was now warming up, and his introduction was brought forward when Girona did find the equaliser from the penalty spot.

Real’s bad day was complete in the final minute when captain Ramos was sent off for a second bookable offence
Stuani hit the frame of the goal and when Douglas Luis hit the rebound Ramos handled to block it. He was shown the yellow card and Stuani scored to make it 1-1.
Ramos then tried to make amends at the other end in his own inimitable way by throwing his hands up in the area and going down at a corner. The referee was not impressed and Portu thundered a shot from distance off the post on the counter.
With his next effort the Girona forward went one better and put the visitors ahead. It was a catalogue of defensive efforts from Real Madrid.
First Odriozola was caught in possession high up the pitch. When the lose ball ran into midfield Casemiro was second to it and Girona raided down Odriozola’s now unguarded wing.
The ball was crossed to the back post where Portu was far more convincing than Marcelo. The full-back leaped into the air sticking out a leg, Portu dived head first to bury the chance and give Girona a historic win.
