GIS – 05 July, 2019: A gathering regrouping fourteen participants, seven girls and seven boys, who have been selected to represent Mauritius for the activities of the  ‘Volet Jeunesse’  in context of the Indian Ocean Island Games  (IOIG) 2019, was held yesterday at the Municipal Council of Port-Louis. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint, was present on the occasion.

Minister Toussaint underlined that the ‘Volet Jeunesse’ is not a competitive discipline but remains an important component of the Games, as it will offer a platform for the participating countries of the Games to showcase their artistic skills and respective cultural background. He pointed out that so far most countries, to the exception of Reunion Island, have confirmed their participation in this activity.

The ‘Volet Jeunesse’, he said, aims at strengthening, through the youths, the bonds of friendship and fraternity that exist between the participating islands of the region. While recalling that the IOIG 2019 is a key unifying regional event, the Minister urged Mauritians to rally and support local athletes by attending the various activities and competitions.

The agenda of activities for the ‘Volet Jeunesse’ includes a theatrical performance, to be held on 21 July 2019 at the Serge Constantin Theatre in Vacoas; l’Assemblée des Jeunes on 23 July 2019 at the Municipal Council of Port-Louis; Traditional dance on 24 July 2019 at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port-Louis; and Journée d’animation et jeux traditionnels on 25 July 2019 at the Mon Choisy public beach.

The participants of the ‘Volet Jeunesse’ will also be involved in the opening and closing ceremonies of IOIG 2019.
