Republic of Mauritius- Mauritius keen to enhance bilateral ties and foster fraternal ties with international community

GIS – 26 June, 2019: Three newly appointed honorary consuls received their exequatur, this morning, during a ceremony held in presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, in Port-Louis.

The three appointed consuls are: the Consulate of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad bin Salamah, the consulate of Ghana, Mr Robert Afriyie, and the consulate of Sri Lanka, Mr Dharam Deo Dhuny.

The Minister recalled that this ceremony demonstrates Government’s willingness to increase the international exposure of Mauritius to various Member States and its determination to enhance bilateral and friendly relations with them. He stated that Consulates have been elected with the objective of working as ambassadors of Mauritius to initiate friendly political dialogues with foreign countries, to foster closer relations and partnership that may facilitate trade, investment and cooperation. Moreover, he spoke about the key role that Mauritius plays by providing increased visibility over the Indian Ocean which is becoming strategic and geopolitically crucial area in the world.

With regard to the bilateral relations between Mauritius and Saudi Arabia, Minister Bodha underlined the considerable deepening of friendly ties over the recent few years. He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its relentless support to Mauritius in its agenda to develop infrastructure and strengthen its welfare state through financial grants. The Government of Mauritius, he added, looks forward to enhance this relationship and tap into new avenues of collaboration in diverse areas. 

As for the Mauritius-Ghana relations, the Minister indicated that Ghana represents a symbolic connection to the African continent which is of considerable importance for Mauritius. He underscored the unflinching support of the African Union at the United Nations General Assembly regarding Mauritius’ fight to regain sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago. Ghana-Mauritius relations, he said, is indeed a crucial part of Government’s Africa Strategy adding that a closer bond will enable both countries to work together with increased capacity, resources and facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience and exchanges in different sectors. He also indicated that Mauritius is keen to take on board other African partners for an enhanced triangular partnership.

Minister Bodha also spoke of the similarities that Sri Lanka and Mauritius share, including its climate, vibrant culture and its tourist industry, regarding which both countries can share and learn from each other. He highlighted Government’s intent to further enhance fraternal ties with Sri Lanka and reiterated the support of Mauritius to the Government of Sri Lanka. He observed that Sri Lanka has experienced difficult moments but is now experiencing a new development cycle that has brought along stability and peace. According to him, this will enable the country to engender its economic development and ensure the progress and prosperity of the nation.
