Republic of Mauritius- Scholarship Award Ceremony for students under the Chagossian Welfare Fund

GIS – 24 June, 2019: A Scholarship Award Ceremony for students of the Chagossian Community who have benefited from the Scholarship scheme under the Chagossian Welfare Fund and succeeded with flying colours in their respective exams were rewarded, on Saturday 22 June 2019, at the Marie Lisette Talate Chagossian Community Centre, Pointe Aux Sables.

The Award ceremony was held in presence of the Minister Mentor, Minister of Defence and Minister for Rodrigues, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, and the Minister of Education, Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun.

During the award ceremony, Ms Jacqueline Bianca who has been conferred with BSc (Hons) in Human Resource Management at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute was rewarded for her achievement with a cash prize of Rs Rs10,000 along with five girls and five boys who succeeded brilliantly in PSAC exam with cash prizes of Rs 6000. Besides, 24 students were awarded a one-off consolation prize of Rs 2000.

The Chagossian Welfare Fund Board which operates under the Ministry of Defence and Minister for Rodrigues, awards cash assistance to students of PSAC (Former CPE) every year. Five girls and five boys are selected among the applicants and they are given Rs6000 yearly to meet costs of pursuing their studies. At times other students who have succeeded but not selected are given a one-off consolation prize.

Students pursuing their studies at University level are given Rs10,000 and those going to IVTB are assisted with a cash prize of Rs5000.

The Fund aims at advancing and promoting the welfare of the members of Chagossian Community and their descendents in Mauritius; developing programmes and projects for the total integration of the members of Chagossian Community and their descendants into the Republic of Mauritius; and maintaining and managing the Chagossian Community Centres in Mauritius together with other community facilities vested in it for the benefit of members of the Chagossian Community and their descendents.
