Republic of Mauritius- Ducere Slam Competition 2018 winners rewarded

GIS – 12 June, 2019:    The three best candidates of the Ducere Slam Competition 2018 received their prizes, yesterday, from the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, during a ceremony organised at the MITD House in Phoenix.


On that occasion, Minister Dookun-Luchoomun outlined that the slam is a new form of creativity and the competition has been a success with regard to the 71 students who have participated to this fourth edition. The competition, she recalled, is in line with Government’s policy of enhancing students’ communication skills.

 

Speaking about creativity, the Minister said that the ideal of unleashing the creative capabilities of children is central to the concerns of the education system in Mauritius.  Creative writing plays an important role in a child’s literacy development and it certainly helps to develop the cognitive and communication skills of children as well as develops critical reading and thinking, she added.

 

The Ducere Foundation, stated the Minister, has been very collaborative with the Ministry Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research in its quest of making local education holistic. With the Foundation’s help, the Ministry is also focussing on personality development, in addition to knowledge acquisition.

 

The grand winner of the Ducere Slam Competition 2018, with a cash prize of Rs 10 000, is Miss Nihma Milhaab Elahee, of Sodnac State Secondary School. The second prize was awarded to Miss Yukino Mayum Chang-Leng of Loreto College of Quatre Bornes, and the third prize to Maithili Sevanandee of Gaetan Raynal State College. They each received Rs 5 000 and Rs 3 000 respectively.
