Machrihanish Golf Club, Scotland
Seen by some as the home of the ‘Greatest Opening Hole in Golf’, the Machrihanish Golf Club has become well known over the years – especially for its Championship Course Hole 1 which requires a carry over the Atlantic.
The course is set in the Machrihanish Dunes by the small village of Machrihanish on the Kintyre Peninsula, several hours’ drive from Glasgow. As to be expected, the course is often quiet and serene thus affording a relaxed game, which is only enhanced by the view out over the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha.
To get to Machrihanish Golf Club, drive from Glasgow on the A83. The journey takes approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.
Lofoten Links – Gimsøysand, Norway
Despite being located almost 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Links course is popular with die-hard golfers who come to the visit the Lofoten Archipelago in northern Norway.
The 12-hole course is spread over cliffs overlooking the Norwegian Sea, with views of steep mountains, white sandy beaches, small fishing villages with picturesque red shacks. Thanks to its extreme northerly location, this course is playable much later at night because it’s in the Land of the Midnight Sun – just be sure to wrap up well! Guests can stay in nearby lodges at Hov Beach to make a night of it.
To get to Lofoten Links Golf Club, drive from Kiruna Airport – actually in Sweden – on the E10. The journey takes approximately 6 hours.
Adamstal Golf Course, Austria
As the Adamstal team says, there are three ingredients that make a golf course fabulous: “a spectacular setting, a dedicated architect and a driving force behind the project” – and the Austrian delivers on all of these in spades, earning the honour of “Austria’s Golf Course of the Year” no less than four times.
The region, the lower Austria alpine foreland, provides a gorgeous backdrop for a distinctive course featuring alpine streams, slopes, clearings and rock formations, designed by Canadian Jeff Howes and realised by Austrian Franz Wittmann. Visitors have a choice of an 18-hole Championship Course and the nine-hole Wallerbach Course.
To get to Adamstal Golf Club drive from Vienna Airport on the A21. The journey is only approximately 1 hour 15 minutes but there is no way to get to the golf course via public transport so driving is a necessity.
Mullion Golf Club, England
The UK’s southernmost golf course is found on the Lizard Peninsula in southern Cornwall, England. Mullion Golf Club is dotted around the spectacular cliffs and towans (sand dunes) near Lizard Point, with reaching views from the links holes across Lamorna and Mousehole, Mounts Bay, Gunwalloe and the iconic St Michael’s Mount.
The course was founded in 1895 as a nine-hole course but later lengthened to an 18-hole, par-70. For those playing from the white tees, the total course length is just over 6000 metres but the tricky course design and coastal winds make this course a real challenge – particularly the 11th hole, where you tee off on the edge of the cliffs.
To get to Mullion Golf Club, drive from Cornwall Airport (Newquay) on the A21. The journey should take approximately 1 hour.
Royal Zoute, Belgium
Founded in 1899, initially as part of the Bruges Golf and Sports Club, this 18 hole-course on the northern coast of Belgium near Knokke-Heist is often considered the most beautiful golf course in the country.
Renamed as Zoute Golf Club and later receiving the ‘royal’ designation, the course was expanded to its current form: two courses of 18 holes, spread over 80 hectares of sand dunes and rare vegetation. The par-72 Championship Course is 6200 metres in length while the Executive Course is a par-64 with a length of 3550 metres. For the crucial 19th hole, the Royal Zoute Golf Club is home to a typical English clubhouse.
To get to Royal Zoute Golf Club, drive east from Ostend-Bruges Airport via the N31. The journey should take approximately 45 minutes.
Amber Baltic Golf Club, Poland
Amber Baltic Golf Club is located near Kołczewo on the Isle of Wolin, on the boundary of the stunning Wolin National Park in the northwestern corner of Poland.

Hvide Klit Golf Resort, Denmark
Often hailed as one of Denmark’s best courses since its opening in the 1970s, Hvide Klit Golf Club is also Denmark’s northernmost golf course, located between the towns of and Ålbæk and Skagen on the northern tip of the Jutland peninsula.
As to be expected, the Anders Amilon-designed coastal course is dominated by wind – so, even though the par-70, 18-hole course is relatively short, players should user a longer iron than they usually would for many of the approaches to the green.
To get to Hvide Klit Golf Club, drive north from Aalborg Airport on the E39. The journey should take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
