🌺 3 daughters of eve
Exploration of islam and femininity
.
Three women, who met at Oxford; Shirin, an upper-class Iranian Muslim, Mona, an Egyptian American and also a faithful believer of Islam who wears a hijab, and then there is Peri, the protagonist who likes in Turkey, and finds herself ‘stuck in between’ those two
.
Prior to finding herself stuck in between her two friends, she first felt this feeling on uneasiness, and incomprehensiveness, while being at her parents’ house. Her mother being an orthodox Muslim and her father a secular one. It was difficult for her to choose sides, neither for her to make up her mind on where she stands on her belief
.
The 3 characters during the story wore a kaleidoscope of religious beliefs which splash into one man – Professor Azur’s who teaches a course called GOD. To find answers to their questions about the existence of Heaven and Hell, or even God, they choose to attend Professor Azur’s seminar
.
What kept me going, was the story of each individual in the story. it was so genuinely written that I could feel myself in all of them. The discomfort at home between the parents. So much fuss about God, but nothing about Love. The damage of the older brother’s body and soul. The shame of the sister-in-law. (I wish this was not real anymore, but I beg to differ). Then, there is Shirin, the over confident and out spoken one, Mona, struggling with her Hijab/scarf, trying to put her mark, despite the resistance. And Peri, confused about her identity, her past, her family and her end
.
They whole book supposedly is about the scandal which tore them apart. But for me, personally, the ending/scandal was a bit flat. It was indeed a page turner, but the end was abrupt. Shafak is a great writer and speaker whom I have great respect. There is so much depth in her work and she knows the culture; both Western and eastern and she portrays Muslim culture prominently. Her grace and intelligence is outstanding.
I give it a 3.8*. It could have been a 4* had it not been for the abrupt ending
